Ven Pongal is a very popular south Indian dish which is mostly prepared for breakfast. But you can have this for night supper too. It is also served as prasadam in many temples in India. It takes less than 30 minutes to prepare this Pongal and taste excellent with sambar or chutney.
Usually, we serve this Pongal with peanut chutney and brinjal sambar.
STEP BY STEP PICTURES OF MAKING VEN PONGAL
Ingredients:
- Rice-1cup
- Moong dal-½cup
- Cumin seeds-1tsp
- Peppercorns -1tsp
- Cashew nuts-2tbsp
- Asafoetida-¼tsp
- Finely Chopped ginger -1tsp
- Ghee -3tbsp
- Curry leaves a handful
Preparation:
Heat a pan and dry roast the rice, dal for 1-2 minutes on low flame.
Next, wash and soak the dal, rice in enough water for 10-15 minutes.
Take a pressure, add the soaked rice and dal along with 4 cups of water and salt. Mix well and cook on medium flame for 3 whistles.
Once the pressure is released, Mix the Pongal well.
Now heat a small pan with ghee, add cumin seeds, peppercorns, cashew nuts, ginger along with asafoetida.
When cumin seeds begin to crackle add curry leaves and switch off the flame.
Pour this mixture onto cooked Pongal and mix well.
Enjoy this delicious and healthy Venpongal with your favourite chutney.
