    Sambar Rice Recipe | Easy Sambar Rice

    Sambar Rice is a south Indian rice dish which is a simple one pot meal that you enjoy with papad. This Sambar Rice is a combination of rice, lentils, sambar powder, chilli powder and by cooking along with mixed vegetables. There are so many variations in preparing this rice but this method is very simple and easy that you can make it within 30 minutes.

    For the second day of Blogging Marathon, in A-z Series I cooked this delicious Sambar Rice. For this whole week, I decided to post recipes with rice like pulaos, biryanis.

    Sambar Rice

     

    Step by step pictures of preparing Sambar Rice Recipe

     

    Ingredients:

    • Rice – 1cup
    • Toor dal – ½cup
    • Carrot, beans, potatoes, radish, peas – 1cup chopped
    • Chopped onion -1
    • Sambar powder- 2tbsp
    • Red chilli powder – 1tsp
    • Tamarind – lemon size
    • Curry leaves a few
    • Salt to taste
    • Oil- 2tbsp
    • Ghee-2tbsp

    For Tempering:

    • Oil- 1tbsp
    • Mustard seeds – 1tsp
    • Urd dal -1tsp
    • Cumin seeds- 1tsp
    • Dry red chillies-2
    • Curry leaves

     

     

    Preparation:

    Wash, soak dal and rice in the water for 15mintues.

    Soak the tamarind in a bowl with hot water and keep aside.

    Heat a pressure cooker with ghee, oil then add chopped onions and fry for a minute till onions turn into translucent.

    Next, add the chopped mixed veggies and sauté on high flame for 5mintues.

    Add sambar and red chilli powder along with salt and mix well.

    Extract the pulp from the tamarind and add to the veggies and stir well.

    Drain the water from the rice, dal and add to the veggies and mix well.

    Add 4cups of water, and check the seasonings.

    Close the pressure cooker lid and cook for 3 whistles.

    Once the pressure is released mix everything well.

    Heat a 1tbsp of oil in a small pan, when oil is hot add mustard seeds along with cumin seeds, dry red chillies and curry leaves.

    When the cumin seeds crackle switch off the flame and add this to the sambar rice and mix well.

    Transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy with Papad.

    Note:

    Here I used frozen pieces you can use fresh ones.

    Adjust sambar powder and red chilli powder according to your taste.

    You can add as many veggies you like.

      This sambar rice is so much better than cooking sambar and rice separately. One pot meals make life so much easier. The bowl of samabar rice looks so inviting.
