Coconut Rice Recipe | Kobbari Annam

Coconut Rice is an easy and flavourful rice made with freshly grated coconut and with few spices. It is one of the most basic South Indian recipes which we make for festivals and special occasions.

  • Cooked rice - 2 cups
  • Freshly grated coconut - 1 cup
  • Mustard seeds - 1Tsp
  • Urad dal -1Tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1Tsp
  • Channa dal - 1Tbsp
  • Dry red chillies - 2
  • Slit green chillies - 3 or 4
  • Cashew nuts - 2Tbsp
  • Hing/asafoetida - ¼Tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Oil- 3Tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves


  • Add oil and salt to the cooked rice, mix well and keep aside.
  • Heat a pan with oil, once it is hot enough add mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin seeds and saute for few seconds. Now add channa dal, dry chillies, green chillies and cashew nut. Saute for few minutes until they change their colour slightly.
  • Next add Hing, curry leaves and fry for few seconds. Now add the grated coconut and sauté on low - medium flame until you get a nice aroma or change their colour lightly. (Don't burn the coconut)
  • Now add cooked rice and mix well until it is nicely combined with the coconut mixture. Add salt as per your taste and mix well again.
  • Finally, add chopped coriander leaves and switch off the flame.



  • You can adjust the green chillies according to your taste.
  • You can make this recipe using leftover rice.
  • For this recipe, you can also use frozen grated coconut but I recommend fresh coconut.
