Dal Khichdi is a healthy and delicious one - pot meal. This khichdi is prepared with rice and yellow moong dal. There are so many khichdi varieties, some people add vegetables to the khichdi while others cook only with dal. There is no need of any side dish for this khichdi.

  • Rice – ½cup
  • Moong dal – ½ cup
  • Finely chopped onion – 1
  • Green chillies – 4
  • Cumin seeds- 1teaspoon
  • Asafoetida a pinch
  • Turmeric powder – ½teaspoon
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1teaspoon
  • Chopped tomatoes -2 small
  • Coriander leaves
  • Ghee – 1tablespoon
  • Oil- 1tablespoon
  • Salt to taste
  1. Wash, soak the rice and dal in the water for 15mintues.
  2. In the meanwhile, chop onions, tomatoes and keep aside.
  3. Heat a pressure cooker with oil and ghee, add cumin seeds and when they begin to crackle add asafoetida and mix well.
  4. Add chopped onions, green chillies and fry for 2mintues or until the onions turn into light golden-brown colour.
  5. Next add ginger garlic paste and fry till raw smell goes. Then add chopped tomatoes along with turmeric powder and cook till the tomatoes are mushed.
  6. Drain the water from the rice, dal and add to the pressure and mix everything well.
  7. Add 3 cups of water and mix well. Check the seasoning.
  8. Close the lid and cook on medium flame for 3 whistles.
  9. Once the pressure is released from the cooker, add coriander leaves and mix well.
  10. Transfer the Dal Khichdi into a serving bowl and enjoy it warm.
